Welcome to Nairobi County, the city in the sun and capital city of Kenya!

Nairobi County, formerly known as Nairobi province, is one of the 47 counties in Kenya. It is also home to the capital city of Kenya.

The name Nairobi is derived from a Maasai phrase “Enkare Nyrobi” meaning a place of calm waters.

Ancient Nairobi sat in an uninhabited swampy area. In 1899, a supply depot was built to facilitate the Uganda Railway construction, which connected Mombasa to Uganda.

Nairobi was the central position between Kampala and Mombasa hence making it ideal for the depot.

Also, its network of rivers made it easy for the camp to be supplied with enough water.

Its elevation made it a suitable residential area for the Indians who flocked Kenya searching for jobs on the railway line.

Eventually, Nairobi grew to be the railway headquarters and finally the capital city of Kenya.
