Nairobi County, formerly known as Nairobi province, is one of the 47 counties in Kenya. It is also home to the capital city of Kenya.
The name Nairobi is derived from a Maasai phrase “Enkare Nyrobi” meaning a place of calm waters.unknown.
Ancient Nairobi sat in an uninhabited swampy area. In 1899, a supply depot was built to facilitate the Uganda Railway construction, which connected Mombasa to Uganda.
Nairobi was the central position between Kampala and Mombasa hence making it ideal for the depot.
Also, its network of rivers made it easy for the camp to be supplied with enough water.
Its elevation made it a suitable residential area for the Indians who flocked Kenya searching for jobs on the railway line.
Eventually, Nairobi grew to be the railway headquarters and finally the capital city of Kenya.
Size Geographically and Location
Nairobi County is located at 1°09′S 36°39′E and 1°27′S 37°06′E and covers an area of 696 square kilometres equivalent to 270 sq. mi.
It is adjacent to the eastern edge of the rift valley, and the Ngong Hills are located to the west, making it the most noticeable geographical feature in Nairobi.
On its north and the southeast is MT Kenya and Kilimanjaro, respectively.
The Nairobi River and its tributaries navigate Nairobi County and join the larger River Athi on its eastern edge.
The county is also adorned by suburbs, which stretch from the UN headquarters in Gigiri in the north to the Kenyatta national hospital in the south.
This stretch covers around 12 kilometers.
The central business district is home to the Kenyan parliament, city hall, Nairobi Low courts, the holy family basilica, and the Kenyatta Conference Centre.
A walk through the streets of Nairobi is a clear sign of how populated the county is. According to the 2019 census, Nairobi County had a population of 4,397,073 inhabitants who lived within 696 km2.
The population has been growing steadily over the years by birth and also through immigration.
Over the years, Kenya has enjoyed political stability compared to other African nations.
Therefore, people worldwide have moved to Kenya and particularly Nairobi to work and settle here.

This story is not complete if I do not mention that Nairobi county is the only city with the largest national park in the town.
The Nairobi national park is in the middle of the county. Seating on an area of 117km, the park is home to lions, zebra, giraffes, and many more.
Get lost in the wild in the middle of the city, an experience you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
